In one-to-one instrumental teaching, we often focus on what the student needs to do: how to breathe, articulate, move, support, phrase, listen or practise. Yet an equally important question is how we ask them to do it. The language used by a teacher can influence far more than a student’s understanding of a technical instruction. It can shape where they place their attention, how they interpret physical sensations, the amount of effort they apply, and even the psychological state in which they approach the instrument.
A simple change in wording can produce a surprisingly different response. Consider the difference between “blow harder” and “allow the air to flow.” Both may be intended to encourage greater energy, but the first can suggest force and muscular exertion, while the second encourages movement, continuity and coordination. Similarly, words such as push, squeeze and force may sometimes be useful, but they can also create tension when a more efficient response is required.
The language of teaching therefore deserves careful consideration. This article explores how words can encourage calmness, focus, physical freedom, musical awareness and independence—and how, over time, the teacher’s language can become the student’s own internal voice.
The ideas here can be brought together into a simple chain:
LANGUAGE → ATTENTION → PERCEPTION → PHYSICAL RESPONSE → SOUND → MUSICAL OUTCOME
The teacher’s words influence where the student places attention. Attention influences what the student perceives. Perception influences physical organisation. Physical organisation influences sound. The resulting sound then feeds back into perception and learning.
For example:
“Blow harder”
→ attention on increasing force
→ perception of greater resistance
→ increased muscular effort
→ potentially greater tension
→ louder sound, but possibly reduced efficiency.
Versus:
“Allow the air to flow”
→ attention on movement and speed
→ perception of flowing air
→ coordinated increase in energy
→ potentially less unnecessary tension
→ greater efficiency and musical freedom.
The physical result may ultimately be similar. The experience of producing it can be entirely different.
That distinction is worth exploring much more deeply in instrumental pedagogy. The most effective teacher may not always be the person with the most precise technical vocabulary, but the person who can find the words that allow a particular student to hear, feel, understand and perform the desired action with the least unnecessary interference.
In that sense, language becomes not simply an explanation of technique, but part of the technique itself.
1. Action words versus process words
The language we use when describing a physical action can have a surprisingly powerful effect on the way a student performs that action. In instrumental teaching, we frequently rely on short, apparently self-explanatory verbs: push, blow, squeeze, press, drive, force, attack, hit. These words are attractive because they are immediate and easy to understand. They appear to tell the student exactly what to do. However, they can also imply a particular physical strategy. “Blow harder,” for example, may be interpreted as an instruction to increase muscular effort, abdominal pressure, facial tension or general physical intensity. “Push the air” can encourage the student to think of the air as something that needs to be physically propelled through resistance. The musical objective may be entirely reasonable, but the language can inadvertently prescribe an inefficient mechanism.
Process-oriented language offers another possibility. Words such as allow, release, guide, direct, coordinate, support, accelerate, expand, connect, shape describe an unfolding process rather than an isolated muscular action. “Allow the air to speed up” can communicate the same musical intention as “blow harder,” but it gives the student a different conceptual model. The student is encouraged to experience the air as something that can change in speed and direction rather than something that must be forcibly expelled.
This distinction is particularly valuable because sophisticated instrumental performance involves the coordination of many systems simultaneously. The teacher may know exactly what physical change is required, but the student may achieve it more successfully if they are given a sensory or process-based route towards it rather than an instruction to activate a particular muscle.
The important principle is not that action words are bad. There are situations in which “push,” “press” or “attack” may be exactly the right language. Rather, teachers should become conscious of the physical assumptions contained within their verbs. The question becomes: What physical response is this word likely to invite? If the answer is unnecessary tension, there may be a more useful way of expressing the same musical intention.
2. “Do less” rather than “try harder”
One of the most deeply embedded assumptions in instrumental learning is that improvement comes from increased effort. When a student struggles with a passage, the teacher may instinctively say, “Try harder,” “Give it more,” “Put more energy into it,” or “Really go for it.” Sometimes increased effort genuinely is required. However, there are many situations in which the student is already exerting too much effort and the problem is actually caused by unnecessary muscular activity, excessive conscious control or anxiety.
The instruction to “try harder” can be particularly problematic because it gives the student no information about where the additional effort should go. The student may respond by increasing everything: more breath, more muscular tension, more pressure, more movement and more mental concentration. The result can be that the original problem becomes worse.
A useful alternative is to introduce the idea of subtraction. Questions such as, “What could you remove?”, “Can you achieve the same result with half the effort?”, “What happens if you do 20% less?”, or “Where are you working harder than necessary?” encourage the student to investigate efficiency. This can be an extremely valuable shift in mindset. Instead of assuming that the solution to difficulty is greater force, the student learns that technical refinement frequently involves doing exactly as much as necessary—and no more.
This also helps students develop a more sophisticated understanding of effort. A difficult musical passage may require enormous commitment, energy and concentration, but that does not mean that every part of the body should be working maximally. Efficient technique often feels surprisingly calm from the inside.
There is also a psychological benefit. “Try harder” can create pressure, whereas “Let’s see what happens if you use less effort” creates an experiment. The student is no longer being asked to prove that they can overcome the difficulty. They are being invited to discover a more efficient solution.
The teacher can therefore introduce an important distinction: effort is not the enemy; unnecessary effort is.
3. Replacing negative instructions with positive alternatives
Teachers frequently use negative instructions because they are trying to prevent an unwanted behaviour: “Don’t tense your shoulders,” “Don’t squeeze,” “Don’t rush,” “Don’t lift your chin,” “Don’t force it,” or “Don’t breathe too high.” These instructions are understandable, but they have an inherent difficulty: they require the student to think about the very behaviour the teacher wants them to avoid.
If a teacher says, “Don’t tense your shoulders,” the student’s attention may immediately move towards their shoulders. They may check them, monitor them and become conscious of whether they are tense. Ironically, this increased monitoring can itself create tension. Similarly, “Don’t rush” can make a student suddenly think about rushing, while “Don’t miss that note” can increase anxiety surrounding the note.
A positive alternative provides the student with a replacement behaviour or sensation. Instead of “Don’t tense your shoulders,” one might say, “Let the shoulders become heavy.” Instead of “Don’t rush,” try “Let the tempo settle.” Instead of “Don’t squeeze your throat,” try “Keep the throat spacious.” Instead of “Don’t force the sound,” try “Let the sound come through freely.”
This is more than a semantic difference. The teacher is moving the student’s attention from suppression to construction. Rather than asking the brain to inhibit something, the teacher gives it something useful to do.
There are occasions when a negative instruction is completely appropriate. A student who is about to fall off a chair probably needs to be told not to fall off the chair! But in technical teaching, where the goal is to establish a repeatable physical coordination, it is often more productive to provide a positive alternative.
Over time, this approach can also influence the student’s internal dialogue. A student who repeatedly hears negative instructions may develop a practice vocabulary dominated by don’t, avoid, stop, wrong, careful. A student who hears positive alternatives begins to develop a vocabulary of release, connect, allow, listen, settle, expand, breathe. The latter is likely to be considerably more useful under performance pressure.
4. External versus internal focus
Where we direct a student’s attention can be as important as the words we use to describe technique. Instrumental teaching often involves directing attention inward: “Relax your jaw,” “Feel your diaphragm,” “Keep your fingers curved,” “Think about your embouchure,” or “Notice your tongue.” This kind of internal focus can be extremely useful when a student is learning a new movement or becoming aware of something they have previously ignored.
However, excessive internal monitoring can also make performance feel fragmented and self-conscious. A student who is thinking simultaneously about their fingers, breathing, tongue, embouchure, posture, shoulders, jaw and abdominal muscles may have very little attention left for actually making music.
External language provides another route. Instead of asking the student to monitor the physical mechanism, the teacher can direct attention towards the sound or musical intention: “Let the phrase travel towards the back of the room,” “Hear the note before you play it,” “Imagine the sound extending beyond the end of the phrase,” “Send the melody forward,” or “Let the sound arrive over there.”
The physical mechanism does not disappear. It simply becomes subordinate to the musical intention.
This distinction can be particularly valuable with advanced students, because highly skilled performance depends upon many physical processes operating with a degree of automaticity. A professional musician cannot consciously supervise every movement during a complex performance. At some point, the body must be allowed to execute patterns that have been learned through repetition.
Teachers therefore have a choice about where they place attention. Internal focus can be useful for diagnosis and learning; external focus can be useful for integration and performance. The two are not competing philosophies but different tools.
A useful teaching question is therefore: “Does this student currently need more awareness of the mechanism, or more freedom from thinking about the mechanism?” Knowing when to move from one to the other may be one of the marks of an experienced teacher.
5. Using imagery instead of anatomical instruction
There is enormous value in understanding anatomy and physiology, particularly for teachers working with advanced students. However, anatomical accuracy does not automatically produce effective teaching. A technically correct explanation can sometimes produce less useful playing because the student becomes preoccupied with consciously manipulating a part of their body.
Imagery can offer a different route. A phrase such as “Imagine the sound floating above the note,” “Think of the air as warm,” “Let the phrase unfold like a long piece of ribbon,” or “Imagine the sound travelling through the space rather than stopping at the instrument” may create an immediate physical response without requiring the student to consciously identify every mechanism involved.
The power of imagery lies partly in its ambiguity. Different students may interpret the same image differently, and that is not necessarily a weakness. A metaphor can create an internal experience without prescribing exactly how the body must achieve it.
This is particularly useful because instrumental technique is not always experienced in the same way by different performers. Two excellent musicians may produce essentially the same musical result while describing their physical experience in completely different language. One may talk about “support,” another about “release”; one may describe a sensation as “forward,” another as “open.” The words are maps, not the territory.
Imagery can also make technical teaching more memorable. A student may forget a detailed explanation of respiratory mechanics within a week but remember for years that a teacher asked them to “let the phrase ride on the breath.”
The teacher’s challenge is to avoid turning metaphor into dogma. If an image works, use it. If it does not, abandon it. The purpose of imagery is not to establish another set of rules but to provide the student with alternative routes towards an experience.
Ultimately, the best metaphor is often the one that changes what the student hears or feels without requiring them to think about the mechanics that produced it.
6. The difference between “make” and “allow”
The verbs make and allow carry very different psychological implications. “Make the sound,” “make the note,” “make the phrase happen,” and “make the breath work” all imply that the student must actively manufacture an outcome. There is an understandable logic behind this: music requires intention and agency. However, the word make can also suggest that the desired result will not happen unless the student exerts sufficient control.
The alternative language of allow introduces a different relationship with the process. “Allow the sound to emerge,” “allow the breath to move,” “allow the vibration to develop,” or “allow the phrase to unfold” suggests that the student’s role is not necessarily to manufacture every aspect of the result but to create the conditions in which it can occur.
This is not an argument for passivity. Allowing is not the same as doing nothing. A musician still has to prepare, coordinate, listen, anticipate, shape and communicate. The distinction is between forcing an outcome and facilitating an outcome.
This can be particularly useful when a student becomes anxious around a technically demanding passage. The more important the note becomes, the more they may feel that they have to “make it happen.” This can lead to excessive physical intervention. Language such as “Prepare it, then allow it to happen” can introduce a sense of trust.
The same principle applies musically. A teacher might say, “Don’t try to make the phrase expressive. Give it direction and let the expression emerge from that.” The student remains fully engaged, but the musical result is no longer treated as an object that must be manufactured.
There is a broader educational principle here. Good technique often involves learning what to do and, equally importantly, what not to interfere with. The mature performer is not necessarily doing more than the beginner. They may actually be doing less, because unnecessary interventions have gradually been eliminated.
7. Language of release
Instrumental teaching can easily become dominated by activation: engage the core, support the breath, activate the embouchure, lift the palate, articulate clearly, maintain posture, keep the fingers active. These instructions all have their place, but they can create an impression that good technique consists primarily of adding muscular actions.
Release deserves equal attention.
Words such as release, soften, open, drop, settle, loosen, suspend, widen, let go can provide a counterbalance to activation. A student may discover that a technical problem is not caused by insufficient activity but by the continuation of an activity beyond the point at which it is useful.
This is particularly relevant to transitions. A movement may begin correctly but then remain held for too long. The student may understand how to engage a particular part of the body but not when to release it. Language can therefore help establish temporal awareness: “Engage, then release,” “Let that tension disappear as soon as the note begins,” “Prepare the movement, but don’t hold the preparation.”
The concept of release also has a psychological dimension. Students who are worried about making mistakes often hold themselves physically. They become protective of the note, the phrase or the performance. “Release” can therefore operate simultaneously as a physical instruction and a psychological permission.
Teachers might explore questions such as: Where are you holding? What could be released? What happens if you stop trying to maintain that position? Can you remain supported without becoming rigid?
The distinction between support and holding is particularly valuable. A student can be supported without being fixed. A body can be organised without becoming rigid. A musical phrase can have direction without being forced.
Introducing release into everyday teaching vocabulary helps students understand that freedom is not the absence of technique; freedom is what efficient technique makes possible.
8. Effort versus tension
Students often assume that if something feels physically demanding, it must also feel tense. This is an important misconception to challenge. High-level musical performance can involve substantial physical effort while still feeling coordinated, responsive and free.
The distinction between effort and tension is therefore worth making explicit. Effort is the energy required to accomplish something. Tension is a physical state that may or may not contribute to that task. A student may need significant energy to produce a powerful musical climax, but unnecessary tension in the jaw, shoulders or hands may actually interfere with the desired result.
Language can help establish this distinction. Rather than saying, “You need more power,” a teacher might say, “You need more energy, but not more tension.” Or: “This needs greater commitment, not greater muscular force.” Such phrases teach students that intensity can come from intention, coordination, speed, resonance, breath, articulation and musical direction rather than simply from tightening the body.
This becomes particularly important as students encounter increasingly demanding repertoire. If they have learned that difficulty equals tension, every new technical challenge may trigger a predictable physical response. The difficulty itself becomes associated with bracing.
Teachers can deliberately experiment with this. Ask the student to play a demanding passage while deliberately using excessive tension, then repeat it while trying to achieve the same result with less. The contrast can make the distinction experiential rather than theoretical.
The goal is not to eliminate effort. That would be unrealistic and potentially counterproductive. Instead, students should learn to identify productive effort and unproductive tension.
This distinction also has significant implications for performance psychology. When students believe that they must physically “try harder” in an important performance, their arousal may rise unnecessarily. If they instead understand that intensity can coexist with physical calm, they have a much more useful strategy for managing pressure.
9. Using verbs that imply movement rather than impact
Many conventional musical verbs imply collision. We hit notes, attack entrances, strike keys, drive phrases and pushthrough difficult passages. These metaphors are deeply embedded in musical culture, and they can be useful when a particular sound genuinely requires a sense of impact. But they also influence how students conceptualise musical events.
Compare “hit the note” with “arrive at the note.” The former creates an image of impact; the latter creates an image of movement. “Attack the entrance” can be replaced by “begin the sound,” “enter the phrase,” or “arrive into the phrase.” “Push through the passage” might become “carry the passage forward.”
These alternatives do not necessarily make music softer. A musician can arrive at a note with extraordinary energy. The difference is that the energy is conceptualised as movement towards something rather than collision with something.
This can be particularly useful for developing continuity. When students think of each note as a separate event, they can unconsciously interrupt the movement between notes. A verb such as carry creates an expectation that the first note contains the energy of the next.
The teacher can experiment with a whole vocabulary of movement: travel, arrive, lead, carry, release, turn, expand, narrow, lift, settle, float, descend, reach, return. These words allow musical instruction to become more closely connected to musical time.
This is also relevant to articulation. Rather than describing articulation exclusively as something the tongue does to the note, it can be described as a way of shaping the beginning of a continuous sound. The emphasis shifts from mechanical interruption to musical communication.
The deeper principle is that language can either fragment music into events or help students perceive it as continuous movement. Choosing verbs that imply movement can therefore support both physical efficiency and musical phrasing.
10. Language of continuity
Many students initially experience music as a sequence of individual tasks. There is the difficult note, then the difficult leap, then the fast passage, then the high note. Their attention jumps from obstacle to obstacle. This can create physical and psychological interruptions in the music.
Language can deliberately reinforce continuity. Words such as connect, carry, continue, flow, lead, travel, unfold, sustain, bridge, emerge encourage the student to perceive relationships between events rather than isolated points.
A particularly useful instruction might be: “Don’t play the next note; let this note take you into the next one.” The technical objective may not have changed at all, but the student’s mental representation of the passage has changed considerably.
Continuity can also be explored through questions. “Where is the energy going?” “What is this note leading towards?” “Can the end of this phrase already contain the beginning of the next?” Such questions encourage students to think horizontally rather than vertically.
This is important because physical movement and musical thought are closely related. If a student mentally stops between every note, the body may also make unnecessary resets. Conversely, if the student hears a continuous line, the physical movements may become more integrated.
The concept extends beyond legato. Even highly articulated music has continuity. Rhythm itself creates relationships between events. A staccato passage can still have enormous forward momentum. A series of detached notes does not have to become a series of disconnected gestures.
The teacher can therefore ask not simply, “How do you play this note?” but, “Where is this note going?”
This small linguistic shift can encourage students to think in phrases rather than notes, trajectories rather than events, and musical intention rather than technical survival. It also helps move the student away from the common habit of preparing for every difficulty as though it were an isolated examination question.
11. The language of anticipation
Many technical problems occur because the student reacts too late. The difficult note arrives, and only then does the student attempt to change the physical setup required to produce it. Language can help move preparation earlier in time.
Rather than saying, “Change your embouchure here,” “Take more air here,” or “Prepare the fingers here,” the teacher can encourage anticipatory awareness: “Let the movement begin before you arrive,” “Prepare the destination early,” “Hear the next phrase while you’re still playing this one,” or “Allow the body to know where it is going.”
Anticipation is fundamental to skilled performance. Expert musicians rarely wait for every event to occur before responding to it. They are constantly preparing for what comes next. The physical system is therefore operating partly in the future.
This can be explored through language that shifts the student’s attention from reaction to preparation. A student playing a difficult leap might be asked to identify the precise point at which they begin preparing for it. Is the preparation happening one note too late? Is the student mentally arriving at the destination before the body has had time to organise itself?
Anticipatory language can also reduce anxiety. Difficult moments often become frightening because the student thinks, “Here comes the difficult note.” Instead, the teacher can help them think, “I am already moving towards it.” The difficulty becomes part of a continuous process rather than a sudden event.
The concept applies equally to musical phrasing. A performer can begin preparing the emotional destination of a phrase several beats before it arrives. The climax therefore feels inevitable rather than manufactured.
Ultimately, anticipation is about teaching the student that good coordination is often organised before the event rather than during it. Language can make this temporal relationship conscious without requiring the student to micromanage the physical mechanism.
12. Process versus outcome
Instrumental education inevitably involves outcomes: correct notes, accurate rhythms, good intonation, beautiful tone, successful performances and examination results. However, an excessive focus on outcome can create anxiety and interfere with learning.
Consider the difference between “Get that note right” and “Let’s investigate what helps that note speak reliably.” The first statement establishes correctness as the immediate goal. The second establishes curiosity and process as the goal.
This distinction is particularly important when a student repeatedly fails at something. If every repetition is framed as another opportunity to get it right, the student can gradually associate the exercise with failure. If each repetition is framed as an experiment, the student begins to collect information.
Teachers can use language such as “Let’s find out,” “What happens if…?”, “Try three different approaches,” “Which version felt more efficient?” and “What did you notice?” This changes the emotional environment of the lesson.
It also develops a scientific approach to practice. The student becomes an investigator. They formulate a hypothesis, try something, observe the result and modify the approach. A mistake is no longer evidence that they are incapable; it is evidence that a particular strategy did not work under those conditions.
This is particularly powerful for advanced students because sophisticated performance problems rarely have simple solutions. There may be several technically viable approaches, and the task is to discover which one works best for that particular performer, instrument, repertoire and musical context.
The teacher therefore becomes less of a person who supplies answers and more of a person who helps the student develop the ability to ask better questions.
The eventual goal is independence. A student who has learned only to pursue correct outcomes may become dependent on teacher correction. A student who has learned to investigate processes can continue developing long after formal tuition has ended.
13. Changing “wrong” into “information”
The word wrong has considerable psychological weight in instrumental education. A note is wrong. An entrance is wrong. The rhythm is wrong. The pitch is wrong. The student may consequently begin to interpret technical errors as evidence about themselves rather than information about their playing.
This distinction is crucial. A wrong note is an observable event. It does not necessarily tell us anything about the student’s ability, intelligence or potential. Language can help separate the event from the identity of the performer.
Instead of “That was wrong,” a teacher might say, “That tells us something,” “Interesting—what changed there?”, “Let’s work out why that happened,” or “The preparation didn’t quite produce the result we wanted.” The error becomes data.
This does not mean abandoning standards. Accuracy still matters. The difference lies in the emotional meaning attached to inaccuracy.
This approach is particularly useful with perfectionist students, who can become paralysed by mistakes. If every error feels threatening, the student may become increasingly cautious. Caution then reduces spontaneity, which can itself create further technical problems.
Curiosity has the opposite effect. If a mistake is interesting rather than threatening, the student can approach it directly. They can repeat it, isolate it, exaggerate it and experiment with it.
Teachers can also distinguish between failure of outcome and failure of process. A student may miss a note despite using exactly the process they intended. That is different from failing to prepare the passage at all. This distinction allows feedback to become much more precise.
The ultimate aim is to develop a student who can say, “That didn’t work; what can I learn from it?” rather than, “I can’t do that.”
That shift in language can have profound consequences for resilience, practice habits and performance confidence.
14. Questions rather than commands
One-to-one tuition provides a unique opportunity to use questioning as a teaching method. The teacher can certainly give direct instructions, but if every problem is solved by the teacher telling the student what to do, the student may become dependent upon external correction.
Questions encourage ownership. “What did you notice?” “Where did that begin to feel difficult?” “What changed when you slowed it down?” “Which version felt more natural?” “What do you think the music needs here?” These questions require the student to observe, interpret and make decisions.
The teacher may sometimes already know the answer. The purpose of the question is not necessarily to discover something unknown to the teacher. It is to encourage the student to discover it themselves.
This distinction is particularly important when teaching physical technique. Instead of saying, “Your shoulders are tense,” the teacher might ask, “What happens to your shoulders when you play that passage?” If the student identifies the tension themselves, they have developed awareness rather than simply received criticism.
Questioning also allows the teacher to discover how the student experiences something. Two students may make exactly the same technical error for completely different reasons. One may be physically tense; another may be mentally distracted; another may simply not hear the intended musical destination.
A question can expose these differences.
There is also a developmental progression. With beginners, direct instruction may be necessary. As students mature, questioning can gradually become more prominent. Eventually, the student begins asking themselves the questions the teacher once asked.
This is perhaps one of the clearest measures of successful teaching: the teacher’s voice gradually becomes the student’s own reflective voice.
15. Sensory language
Technical instruction often assumes that students experience their bodies in the same vocabulary as their teachers. They do not. One student may describe a successful breath as “open,” another as “deep,” another as “easy,” and another may simply say, “It felt right.”
Teachers can help students develop a personal sensory vocabulary by asking questions rather than imposing descriptions. What did you feel? Was it lighter or heavier? Did the movement feel quick or slow? Did the sound feel close or distant? Did the phrase feel narrow or expansive?
Sensory language is particularly useful because it links three areas of musical experience: what the student does, what the student feels, and what the student hears.
For example, a student may discover that when the sound becomes more focused, they experience less facial effort. Another may notice that a freer breath produces a particular sensation in the ribs. These associations become valuable reference points during practice.
The teacher should be careful not to imply that a particular sensation is universally correct. Sensations vary considerably between individuals, instruments and contexts. What matters is whether a sensation is associated with a reliable musical outcome.
This also provides a useful way of teaching students to reproduce successful performances. Instead of simply saying, “Do that again,” the teacher can ask, “What was different that time?” The student begins to identify the combination of physical and auditory sensations associated with success.
Over time, the student builds an internal library of experiences. They know what efficient playing feels like, what unnecessary tension feels like, what a good breath feels like, and what a well-connected phrase feels like.
This sensory vocabulary becomes especially valuable under performance conditions, when detailed conscious instructions are difficult to access. A student may not remember an entire technical explanation, but they may remember, “I know what this is supposed to feel like.”
16. Avoiding absolute language
Words such as always, never, must, correct, wrong, natural, and the right way can be useful in certain contexts, but instrumental technique is rarely as absolute as these words suggest.
A particular physical strategy may work exceptionally well for one student and poorly for another. A posture that is useful in one context may need to change in another. A particular approach to articulation may be appropriate for one style but inappropriate for another. Even apparently fundamental technical principles often have exceptions at a high level.
Language such as “One possibility is…”, “For this passage…”, “Experiment with…”, “You might find…” and “In this particular context…” creates space for exploration.
This does not mean becoming vague. Teachers still need to be clear. The point is to distinguish between a useful strategy and an absolute law.
This is particularly important for advanced students, because they are beginning to encounter multiple teachers, performers and schools of thought. They may be told completely different things by different experts. If their previous education has taught them that every instruction is absolute, these contradictions can become confusing.
A more flexible vocabulary teaches students to evaluate ideas. Does this work for me? In this repertoire? At this tempo? With this instrument? For this particular musical objective?
The teacher therefore becomes someone who offers tools rather than commandments.
There is also a psychological benefit. Absolute language can create fear around experimentation. If the student believes there is one correct way to do something, experimentation feels dangerous. If they understand technique as a set of adaptable strategies, experimentation becomes part of learning.
The aim is not relativism. There are certainly things that are technically inefficient, physically damaging or musically inappropriate. Rather, the aim is to develop precision without unnecessary dogmatism.
17. Separating intention from mechanism
One of the most useful distinctions in instrumental teaching is between what we want to achieve and how we think the student should achieve it.
A teacher may know that a particular musical result requires a certain physical coordination and therefore instruct the student directly in that coordination. Sometimes this works brilliantly. But sometimes the student can achieve the same outcome through a different physical pathway.
For example, rather than saying, “Move this part of your body in this particular way,” the teacher might first establish the intention: “I want this phrase to feel expansive and effortless.” The student can then explore what physical changes might create that sensation.
This approach respects individual variation. The teacher is concerned primarily with the musical result and the efficiency of the process, rather than insisting upon a particular internal mechanism.
It also encourages problem-solving. The student learns to ask, “What do I need to change in order to create this sound?” rather than, “What exact movement has my teacher told me to perform?”
This distinction is particularly important as students progress. Beginners may need clear models and instructions. Advanced performers need to develop adaptable strategies because repertoire, instruments, acoustics and musical contexts constantly change.
The teacher can therefore frame technique as a means rather than an end. What is the musical intention? What physical organisation supports it? Is there unnecessary interference?
This also protects against the common problem of technique becoming detached from music. Students can spend enormous amounts of time “fixing” a physical action without remembering why they are doing it.
A useful teaching sequence becomes:
Musical intention → desired sensation → possible physical strategy → sound → evaluation.
The mechanism is important, but it serves the music rather than becoming the music.
18. Language and negative attention level
The teacher’s language does not merely communicate information. It also contributes to the student’s emotional and physiological state.
Consider a teacher rapidly saying, “Again. Faster. More air. Come on. Don’t stop. Push through it. Keep going.” Even if every instruction is technically reasonable, the cumulative effect may be to increase the student’s negative attention. Their breathing may become less settled, their movements less economical and their attention narrower.
Conversely, a teacher who slows their speech, pauses, uses fewer words and communicates confidence can help create a calmer environment. “Take your time. Breathe. Let’s listen to that first note. Now let the phrase unfold.” The words themselves become part of the teaching environment.
This is especially important in one-to-one tuition because the teacher has considerable influence over the student’s emotional state. A nervous student can easily interpret the teacher’s urgency as evidence that something is wrong. A calm teacher can communicate that difficulty is manageable.
The teacher therefore needs to consider not only what they say but how quickly, loudly and urgently they say it.
This becomes particularly significant when preparing students for performance. If lessons repeatedly involve heightened emotional reactions to mistakes, the student may begin associating musical difficulty with threat. If lessons model calm observation and problem-solving, the student learns a different response.
There is an important paradox here: sometimes the most powerful teaching intervention is saying less.
A student who has just made a mistake may not need another five instructions. They may need a breath, a pause and a chance to listen. The teacher’s silence can communicate confidence: we don’t need to panic; we can work this out.
In this sense, the teacher is not only teaching music; they are teaching the student how to regulate their state while making music.
19. Metaphors of weight and lightness
Words such as heavy, light, grounded, floating, suspended, anchored, lifted are particularly useful because they can describe both physical sensation and musical character.
However, they need to be handled carefully. “Light” should not mean weak, and “heavy” should not automatically mean tense. A powerful musical statement can feel physically light. A quiet sound can require substantial physical organisation.
This apparent contradiction can be extremely valuable pedagogically. A student might be asked to produce a powerful phrase while imagining that the body remains light. They may discover that intensity can come from musical intention and efficient coordination rather than muscular heaviness.
Similarly, the concept of suspension can be useful. Something can feel supported without feeling held. A phrase can have weight without being pressed down. A note can have presence without being forced.
These metaphors allow teachers to explore qualities that are difficult to describe anatomically. The student may not know precisely which muscles are involved, but they may understand immediately what “let the phrase float forward” means.
They also encourage whole-body awareness. Musical weight is not necessarily produced at the point where the sound is generated. The sensation of groundedness, for example, may influence the whole posture and therefore the efficiency of the musical action.
Again, metaphors should be treated as exploratory tools rather than universal truths. The teacher can ask, “What does ‘light’ mean to you here?” One student may experience it as less muscular effort; another as faster movement; another as more space.
The value lies in developing a vocabulary of sensations that allows musical intention to influence physical organisation.
20. Language of permission
Students often arrive at lessons carrying an internal collection of rules: I must play perfectly. I must not miss. I must take a huge breath. I must keep everything supported. I must never tense. I must get this right.
Some of these rules may have been consciously taught; others may have developed through years of experience. Either way, they can become restrictive.
Language of permission offers an alternative. Phrases such as “You can let that go,” “You don’t have to force this,” “It’s okay to take your time,” “Give yourself permission to breathe,” “You can make a mistake here,” or “Let’s see what happens if you don’t try to control it” can reduce the perceived threat surrounding a difficult task.
Permission does not mean lowering standards. A teacher can simultaneously maintain a very high musical expectation while removing unnecessary psychological pressure.
This is particularly useful for students who become tense when they know they are being assessed. If they believe that every repetition is a test, they may become increasingly guarded. If the teacher establishes the lesson as a safe experimental environment, the student can take risks and discover more.
There is also a subtle difference between permission and reassurance. Reassurance says, “Don’t worry; you’ll be fine.” Permission says, “You are allowed to experience the difficulty without needing to fight it.”
The latter is often more empowering.
It teaches students that calmness does not require the absence of difficulty. They can feel nervous and still breathe. They can encounter a difficult passage and remain curious. They can make a mistake and continue.
Ultimately, permission-based language can help students develop a healthier relationship with challenge: difficulty is something to engage with, not something from which they need to protect themselves.
21. The language of positive attention
“Concentrate” is one of the most common instructions in music education, yet it is surprisingly imprecise. Concentrate on what? For how long? With what kind of attention? And what happens when concentration itself becomes an effortful act?
Students benefit from being taught that attention can be directed rather than simply increased.
A teacher might say, “Listen specifically to the beginning of the note,” “Hear the destination before you start,” “Keep part of your attention on the pulse,” “Notice the movement between these two notes,” or “Listen to what happens immediately after the breath.” These instructions give attention a clear object.
This can prevent the student from trying to concentrate on everything simultaneously. Musical performance requires selective attention. Sometimes the most important thing is the sound; sometimes rhythm; sometimes physical sensation; sometimes the interaction with another musician.
Attention can also be deliberately moved. A student might first focus internally on the breath, then externally on the sound, then globally on the musical phrase. This develops flexibility rather than constant self-monitoring.
There is an important relationship between attention and calmness. Concentration does not have to mean narrowing into an intense, rigid state. A student can be highly attentive while remaining physically relaxed and mentally spacious.
Teachers can experiment with asking students to describe the quality of their attention. Was it narrow or broad? Fixed or moving? Heavy or light? Were they listening to the sound or thinking about producing it?
This can become particularly powerful in performance preparation. Students can learn that when anxiety causes attention to collapse onto a single difficult note, they have the ability to deliberately widen it again—to hear the phrase, the accompaniment, the acoustic space and the musical destination.
In this sense, attention becomes another technical skill.
22. Changing “control” to “coordination”
The word control is deeply embedded in instrumental teaching: control the breath, control the embouchure, control the fingers, control the sound, control the dynamics. Yet excessive emphasis on control can create the impression that the performer must consciously supervise every part of the body.
Highly skilled performance does not work this way. Many movements become automated through practice. The performer’s conscious attention is therefore better directed towards musical intention, listening and decision-making than towards micromanaging every physical process.
Words such as coordinate, organise, balance, respond, adapt, communicate, integrate can offer a more useful conceptual model.
Coordination suggests that different systems work together rather than that one conscious mind controls every component. A musician does not necessarily need to tell every muscle what to do. They need to establish conditions in which the relevant systems coordinate efficiently.
This is particularly useful when students become technically over-controlled. They may know exactly what their fingers, tongue, breath or embouchure are supposed to do but become less able to play spontaneously. The teacher can ask, “What happens if you stop trying to control that and instead listen to the result?”
This does not mean abandoning technical awareness. It means understanding that conscious control is a learning tool, not necessarily the final state of performance.
The developmental journey might therefore be described as:
Conscious instruction → conscious coordination → repetition → automaticity → expressive freedom.
The teacher’s language should evolve accordingly. What was once “control this movement” can eventually become “trust that movement and listen to what happens.”
That transition is fundamental to mature musicianship.
23. Language that encourages autonomy
The ultimate purpose of one-to-one teaching should be to make the student increasingly independent. This means that the language of the lesson needs to evolve as the student’s competence develops.
A beginner may need: “Put your fingers here.”
A developing student may need: “Notice what your fingers are doing.”
An advanced student may benefit more from: “What do you think your fingers need to do here?”
This represents a gradual transfer of responsibility.
Autonomy does not mean leaving students to discover everything for themselves. Expert teaching involves providing carefully chosen information at the right moment. The goal is to ensure that the student eventually becomes capable of generating that information independently.
Teachers can deliberately ask students to diagnose problems before offering a solution: “What do you think caused that?” “What would you change?” “Which approach would you try?” Even if their initial answer is imperfect, the process develops independence.
Students can also be encouraged to choose between strategies. “Would you rather slow the passage down, isolate the leap or change the articulation?” This communicates that practice is not simply compliance with teacher instructions; it is decision-making.
Eventually, the student begins to internalise the teacher’s questioning process. They arrive at practice sessions asking themselves what changed, what they hear, what they feel and what might be adjusted.
That is the point at which teaching has become learning.
A useful long-term progression might therefore be:
Teacher tells → teacher asks → student observes → student evaluates → student decides → student teaches themselves.
This is particularly important for musicians who will eventually need to prepare independently for performances, auditions, examinations and professional work.
The successful teacher is therefore not the person whose students always know what the teacher wants them to do. It is the teacher whose students eventually know how to work out what they need to do for themselves.
24. The teacher’s vocabulary becoming the student’s inner voice
Perhaps the most profound reason to examine teaching language is that the words used repeatedly by a teacher do not disappear when the lesson ends. They can become part of the student’s internal dialogue.
A student may eventually practise alone and hear an internal voice saying, “Don’t tense. Don’t miss it. More air. Come on. You’ve got to get this right.” That voice may originally have belonged to several teachers over many years, but it has become the student’s own.
This makes the teacher’s vocabulary extraordinarily important.
If a teacher consistently uses language such as “push, squeeze, force, attack, don’t miss, be careful,” the student may develop an internal language of vigilance and threat. If the teacher instead uses “allow, listen, connect, release, prepare, explore, breathe, respond,” the student may develop a language that encourages calmness and curiosity.
This does not mean that difficult feedback should be softened to the point of meaninglessness. Students need honesty. But honesty can be communicated without creating unnecessary threat.
The teacher might say, “That wasn’t reliable yet; let’s find out why,” rather than, “You keep getting that wrong.” The musical standard remains high, but the student’s identity is not placed on trial.
Over time, the student’s internal vocabulary becomes a form of self-teaching. Before a difficult passage, they may remember, “Prepare early.” During the passage, “Let the air move.” After a mistake, “What changed?” Before performance, “Listen rather than control.”
At that point, the teacher is still present—but indirectly.
This may be one of the most important responsibilities of instrumental teaching: we are not simply teaching students how to play their instrument; we are helping determine the language with which they will speak to themselves while doing it.
